Out of Ireland: Senator Billy Lawless

July 5th saw a visit by Senator Billy Lawless to the Memorial. Senator Lawless is now regarded as a leading activist for immigration reform for the estimated 50,000 undocumented Irish and millions of people of other nationalities. He is the first emigrant senator to be appointed to such a position which allows him to hold a seat in the Irish Seanad (the Irish legislature) but live in Chicago. His visit comes after former Taoiseach Enda Kenny made his speech at The Irish Memorial last March promoting Irish emigrant voting rights.
