GROUP VISITS & EDUCATIONAL TOURS

EXPERIENCE THE HISTORY OF AN GORTA MÓR TOGETHER

HISTORY UNBOUND

The Irish Memorial welcomes schools, historical societies, and civic organizations for self-guided or docent-led tours. Located in Old City, Philadelphia, the site offers a powerful educational setting for groups of all sizes to explore the story of resilience and hope.

EDUCATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

THE MONUMENT AS NARRATIVE

The Monument itself is a narrative and historical presentation. It depicts the harrowing starvation in Ireland, the desperate people embarking for America, the grueling voyage across the Atlantic, and finally, the arrival of immigrants in Philadelphia. This visual storytelling allows students to see the human faces of history.

EIGHT INFORMATION STATIONS

Surrounding the monument are eight information stations. The first four detail the conditions in Ireland leading to the starvation. The remaining stations describe the perilous “coffin ships,” the hostile reception in the New World, the major contributions made by the Irish to our country, and the modern lessons to be learned from The Great Hunger.

A VIRTUAL INTRODUCTION

Watch this brief overview to see the scale and detail of Glenna Goodacre’s bronze masterpiece. This video serves as an excellent introduction for students and group leaders, illustrating how the Memorial acts as a permanent history lesson in the heart of Philadelphia.

From the quiet desperation of the Irish potato fields to the bustling docks of the Delaware River, witness the narrative journey that awaits your group.

SCAVENGER HUNT

To make the experience fun and interactive for students, teachers may organize a Scavenger Hunt using the monument’s vignettes.

SELF-GUIDED TOURS

The site is designed for exploration. Information plinths lining the pathways tell the story of the Memorial at your group’s own pace, suitable for all ages.
